What a thread lift is

Who a thread lift is suitable for

Thread lifts are generally considered for mild to moderate sagging along the jawline, cheeks and neck, in patients whose skin still has elasticity. They are less suited to significant skin excess, where a surgical assessment is the more honest answer. Threads are not placed during pregnancy or breastfeeding, over an active skin infection, or in patients with a known allergy to the suture material. Suitability is decided by the doctor at consultation.

Recovery and aftercare

In the first month the threads are held by their barbs alone: the body's own anchoring tissue only starts forming around a thread at about day 14 and reaches full strength near day 30, while the thread material is gradually losing tension of its own. That is why the restrictions below run longer than many patients expect — they protect the result during the handover from mechanical to biological hold.

Swelling peaks at 24 to 48 hours and mostly settles within 7 to 14 days; bruising clears in the same window. A feeling of tightness or pulling when smiling is expected for 2 to 4 weeks and is not a complication.
Sleep on your back with the head raised for the first 5 to 7 nights — a night of face-down pressure works against the lift direction for hours at a time.
Makeup can go on after 24 hours. Wash the face gently without rubbing or scrubbing for the first 7 days, and keep entry points clean while they seal.
Avoid strenuous exercise and high-impact sport for 2 weeks; light walking is fine from day 2 or 3.
Avoid sauna, steam rooms and hot yoga for 3 weeks — heat increases swelling and accelerates how fast absorbable threads break down.
Avoid wide mouth opening, prolonged dental work, chewing very tough food, facial massage, facials and scrubs for 4 weeks, and deep or vigorous facial massage for 3 months. Opening the jaw wide and massage pull directly against the barbs before the anchoring tissue has matured. Emergency dental care always comes first — just tell the dentist you have facial threads.
Avoid alcohol for at least 72 hours and smoking for at least 2 weeks: alcohol increases bruising, and nicotine impairs the collagen response the result depends on.
Other injectables (botulinum toxin, filler) wait 3 weeks. Heat-based devices such as HIFU or radiofrequency over the treated area should be planned with the doctor — published guidance genuinely disagrees on the interval, so it is a consultation decision, not a booking decision.

When to contact the clinic

Rapidly increasing one-sided swelling in the first 48 hours, or redness, warmth and discharge tracking along a thread line from around day 3 onwards — infection is the most commonly reported serious event with threads and responds well to early treatment.
Swelling near the ear or jaw that worsens at mealtimes in the first week, severe pain on one side only, any weakness of facial movement, or pain that is still significant beyond day 10.
Dimpling or asymmetry that persists past 2 weeks: early on it usually responds to simple adjustment at a review, so it is a reason to come in, not to wait. A visible thread end at any time is a reason to be seen.

On duration: the threads are absorbable, and independent reviews put the clinically visible lift at roughly 6 to 12 months for most patients — material resorption time and visible-effect time are two different numbers, and this page states both honestly. Thread lift compared with other lifting treatments

Thread lifts reposition tissue mechanically and prompt collagen along the thread path. Ultraformer and Ulthera use focused ultrasound and Thermage and Oligio use radiofrequency, all of which tighten tissue with energy rather than repositioning it, and leave nothing under the skin. Biostimulators such as Sculptra and Radiesse act on volume and collagen over months. What are the side effects and risks of a thread lift?

Common and expected: swelling and bruising along the thread path for 3 to 7 days, a tight or pulling sensation when smiling for about two weeks, and sometimes being able to feel the thread under the skin early on. Less common but reasons to be seen: increasing pain, fever, spreading redness, or a visible thread end.
