Where it actually goes wrong: the traps before anyone picks up a needle

Most of the stories that end badly did not go wrong at the injection. They went wrong in the half hour before it. Every item below comes with what it looks like and what to say — usable in any clinic, including this one.

    1. 1The "consultation" is a sales meeting

What it looks like Whoever is with you talks about packages, availability and what is included today, but has barely touched your face or asked you to make an expression. A real consultation involves looking at skin layers, muscle movement and bone support — none of which can be done from across a desk.

      What to say

"Are you the person who will be treating me?" If not, meet that person before you decide anything.

    2. 2Everything you ask for is agreed to

What it looks like You ask for masseter toxin and masseter toxin is booked. You ask for cheek filler and cheeks are filled. It feels smooth, but laxity, volume loss and skin quality look alike in a mirror and are treated differently. A doctor willing to say "what you asked for is not what you need" is worth more than one who agrees.

      What to say

"Is my main issue laxity, volume loss, or skin quality?" Make them separate the three.

    3. 3Finding out afterwards that it cannot be dissolved

What it looks like HA filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. PCL, PLLA and threads cannot — a result you dislike stays until the material metabolises. Asking before is one sentence. Asking after is several months.

      What to say

"Can what you are putting in today be dissolved? If I dislike the result, what happens?"

    4. 4The product arrives already prepared from another room

What it looks like The syringe, vial or thread packet is opened somewhere you cannot see and arrives already drawn up. A sealed package opened in front of you is the one piece of evidence that cannot be prepared in advance — box, lot number and expiry can be photographed before it is opened. Asking is not being difficult.

      What to say

"Can it be opened in front of me? I would like to photograph the box and lot number first."

    5. 5A free revision promised before anyone has seen a problem

What it looks like It is the most reassuring sentence and the least informative one: promising a fix before seeing the problem is guessing. The useful answer is a pathway — who you contact after you fly home, how fast, in what language, how any further treatment is assessed and how it is costed.

      What to say

"If something looks wrong after I get home, exactly who do I contact, how, and how quickly?"

    6. 6Booking too close to the date that matters

What it looks like Energy and collagen-stimulator results appear over weeks, not on the flight home. Thread swelling is most visible for 5–7 days and injection bruising for 3–7. Treating for a specific date with two days in hand puts all the risk on recovery.

      What to say

"I have to be seen in public by the Xth — does this fit?" Name the date and let the doctor reorder or change the plan around it.

    7. 7Everything goes through a middleman

What it looks like Price, plan and aftercare all reach you through an agent and you have no direct line to the clinic. When something needs attention, the hard part is usually not the complication — it is having nobody to talk to. A direct contact in your own language matters more than how good the agent sounds.

      What to say

"Can I contact the clinic directly on WeChat, WhatsApp or LINE?"

None of these is aimed at a particular clinic, and none is a claim that they happen elsewhere but not here. They are questions you can put to whoever is in front of you, including us. Results vary from person to person, and the plan is decided by the doctor at consultation.

    Common questions

How do I tell a consultation from a sales meeting?
Two things. Whether anyone actually examines your face — pressing the skin, asking you to make expressions, separating laxity from volume loss — and whether the person doing that is the person who will treat you. A conversation about packages and availability where nobody touches your face is not a consultation. Ask directly: "Are you the person who will be treating me?"
Which materials cannot be dissolved afterwards?
HA filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. PCL, PLLA and threads cannot — a result you dislike stays until the material metabolises. That makes reversibility a real argument for HA on a first treatment or in a delicate area such as the tear trough. Asking before takes one sentence.
A clinic offers a free revision if I am unhappy. Is that reassuring?
It carries very little information: promising a fix before seeing the problem is guessing. The more useful question is the pathway — who you contact after you fly home, how fast they reply, in what language, how further treatment is assessed and how it is costed. A clinic that can answer those is telling you more than one that promises.
How far ahead of an important date should I book?
Energy devices and collagen stimulators show their change over weeks, so at least 6–8 weeks is usually sensible. Thread swelling is most visible for 5–7 days and injection bruising typically settles in 3–7. Tell the doctor the latest date you must be seen in public and the plan and order can be arranged around it.
